Review - Crushing It!
Crushing It! by Gary Vaynerchuk is a book about entrepreneurship and pursuing your passions. It might not at first seem like a book about investing, because it’s not about investing money, but it’s about investing in yourself. I found this book to be very inspiring. I ended up buying the audiobook out of convenience, but I think for this book it’s the way I’d recommend getting it. Gary actually reads the book himself and he has a good voice to listen to. On top of that, he sometimes goes ‘off script’ to elaborate on a point or share valuable insight into what he is talking about.
Who is Gary Vaynerchuk?
Gary Vaynerchuk is an entrepreneur, social media guru, presenter, investor, wine expert and life long hustler. Gary and his family immigrated to New York when he has very young from what is now Belarus. As a boy he traded toys, baseball cards, really anything to make a dime and when he was old enough he took over the family wine business, now known as Wine Library. Utilizing YouTube and the internet to grow the family business from $5million to $60million in a matter of a few years. Since then Gary started many companies such as: VaynerMedia and VaynerSports. He’s also one of the most active people I have ever seen on social media, posting anything from motivational quotes, to his own public speeches to rants about his personal opinions.
Since discovering him earlier this year, Gary Vaynerchuk has quickly become one of my favourite influencers or role models. If you haven’t heard of Gary, search him on Instagram right now (@GaryVee) and check out some of his content. He has a very honest and blunt approach to giving advice and telling his story. At first his way of doing things might actually rub you the wrong way. But he is very successful and he is focused on helping others by providing his own insight and experiences. He’s done a lot, he knows a lot, and he shares a lot.
What is Crushing It!?
Crushing It! refers to taking control of your life and doing what you love every single day.
Let’s Dive In
The book is comprised of two parts, Part One: Get Pumped and Part Two: Create Your Pillar.
Part One is focused on the mindset and mentality Gary believes it takes to be Crushing It. From what I took away from Part One is absolutely everyone has something of value to offer. It does take work, effort and strategy to realize its potential, but everyone has got that magical ‘it’ people talk about. We aren’t all meant to do the same thing, but we are all meant to do something that matters. And I think that is really emphasized in one of my favorite things about this book, the real life success stories featured in this book.
The book itself alternates from a chapter of the original publication of Crush It! and real life people who have taken the Crush It! mentality to make a positive change in their lives and are therefore Crushing It!. The list of everyone featured in this book is listed below, they include an aspiring DJ, a clothing designer, bloggers, a photographer, even the ‘What’s Inside’ YouTube phenomenons and many more. There’s a lot of variety featured in the book and I think there’s someone almost anyone can look up to or make a connection with.

Something that becomes quickly obvious is all of these people are from different walks of life and realized their own purpose. The variety is great and I think makes these people very easy to relate to.
Part Two focuses on social media and how you can use each discussed platform to its full potential to grow your business and passion.
The main focus of this book is Gary’s opinions and logic on how you can use the popular social media platforms of today to transform your business from a side project to a hire more people project, or anything in between. He talks about: Musical.Ly, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Podcasts and Voice-First (Siri, Google Home, Amazon Alexa). A great thing is, after talking about the different platforms and how to use them to grow your business, a different persons (from the above list) is featured after explaining their success story.
Gary has a lot of opinions and says a lot of stuff, but one main thing really stood out in this book, kindness. Even on his current social media platforms the message of being kind, caring and taking time is abundantly clear. Gary believes that if you want to be successful on social media, in business, in life, you need to be kind and care about the people that are interested in you, your message and your life. He encourages everyone to take the time out of their day to engage with their social media following, if someone comments or messages you take the time to respond and show them you’re a real person, not just an account run by someone. Reach out and try to positively influence as many people as you can.
In an age where technology is replacing human interactions, this seems like an unbelievably important thing to remember and try to do.
Who Should Read Crushing It!?
If you’re someone who has had an idea or two on the back-burner, someone who feels like you’re in a rut, or someone looking to make a change in their life, then this book is for you. Most of Gary’s philosophies and approaches to the way he does business is based on the internet. Starting with blogs and YouTube, moving into social media, vlogs, podcasts, books and audiobooks, Gary kind of does it all. That’s a big focus of this book.
Gary will motivate and inspire you to find a way to make your passions a bigger part of your life, smartly. He won’t tell you things happen overnight, Gary is a self made kind of guy and he knows the struggle and hustle it takes to turn something into something big. You’ll often hear him talk about ‘eating s***’, sacrificing a lot and putting everything you can into what you want to do. He is a big supporter of working on your passion after your day at work, finding time around that. You don’t need to put yourself in a risky situation to make something work, he is a big believer that things happen over time. And he’s not the only one.
